Talk about a long-distance reply: when you asked your question, we either lived in Dauphin MB, or had already moved to Summerside PE, where we now live.

Cell phone. Every time we get a telemarketing call, we add that number to a contact called"spam"which has a custom ringtone. Our old phones didn't have the option for silence as a ringtone choice, so I simply recorded 20 seconds of "static" (not really silence). It occurs to me that maybe phones that aren't 3 years old have better ways to solve this problem, but it's what we could do at the time with what we had.

Actually for home phone, we mostly don't even have the ringer on. With Bell, we get email notification of messages. We only use it as an outgoing line. No one knows the number. (even I would have to look out up). We just needed something for house sitters, but when we go home, off it doesn't affect our cable bundle, we may just cancel it if/when we stop traveling.

Is this for a home phone or cell phone? Which provider(s) are you with?

Glad you found this, since my attempts to "record" silence on the phone for use as a ringtone weren't great. Especially at night, the kind of static noise sounds like weird breathing or "it's coming from inside the house" noises. :)

I think I would still put a copy of the itinerary on the inside, just in case. Airport security can get into the TSA locks if they need to.

Thanks, Alex and Camille, for the information about Bongo. Where in the US are your addresses? Our MyUS.com address is in Bradenton FL, and that presents us with a challenge related to MLB.tv. I'd prefer an address relatively far away from any Major League Baseball team. Something in North Dakota or Montana would be great. :)

Excelent blog! Very good tips for living abroad. I will take note as I am currently traveling as well :) I must add, I agree with Camille. There are other services besides myus for parcel forwarding. I have used BongoUS.com as well and their service is really good and shipping is very fast (less than 4 days). Just a heads up!

Very helpful article. My husband & I have recently gone 'outre-mer' for a while. We live(d) up in MA and we found service similar to MyUS called Bongo International. They have been so helpful not only with mail but in getting stuff to us from US based web retailers that don't normally ship out of the states. Has been a pleasure working through them. Thanks, Catherine. We now live in Summerside PE and we have started looking at our next step. We have enough passive income to support a minimal version of our current lifestyle, but not enough to support our actual spending, which reflects a lifestyle full of travel. We'd like to add another $2k/month in passive income, but we don't have to rush into it. I suspect that, once an opportunity to do that comes up, we'll seize it.

Good luck creating income streams for yourself! We fell into rental properties by some luck, and now we've started looking at other kinds of income.

We left at the end of May, but we know we want to return. Unfortunately, we don't have Earth Class Mail in Canada, but knowing that you could set up transfers between Bancomer and a US bank gives us hope that we could do the same in Canada. I could see living in Mazatlan longer term, but probably a few years in the future yet. Thanks for the information!
